Friend Of Oscar Grant Shot And Killed In Hayward

HAYWARD (KCBS/CBS SF) – A man, who was shot and killed Friday night at a Hayward gas station parking lot, has been identified as one of the men on the Fruitvale Bay Area Rapid Transit station platform with Oscar Grant, when he was killed on January 1, 2009.

Police found 25-year-old Johntue Caldwell suffering from gunshot wounds in a car at the gas station on West Tennyson Road and Calaroga Avenue around 5:30 p.m.

Officers said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said it appears that Caldwell had been sitting in the parked car, when at least one suspect approached him and fired several rounds.

KCBS' Mark Seelig Reports:

The suspect fled the scene and is still unaccounted for. Police said that they do not believe the shooting was random, although a motive has not been determined.

Oscar Grant's uncle, Cephus Johnson, was one of many who signed a t-shirt with Caldwell's face on it at the gas station.

"Johntue was doing nothing wrong in the past two years, especially after the death of Oscar," Johnson said. "He was in school, he was being a father, he was loving his children, he was spending time with the family."

Johnson said that Caldwell's death is just another tragedy that has hit his family.

"When will it end? We have police brutality going on in the communities, we have crimes committed in the community against one another. What is happening?" he asked.

Caldwell was one of several friends with Oscar Grant, when he was shot and killed by former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle on New Year's Day, 2009.  He was a plaintiff in a related civil suit against BART scheduled to begin next month.

A vigil will be held for him Saturday at 6 p.m. at the corner where he was shot, according to event organizers.

Caldwell was also the godfather of Grant's daughter, Tatiana, who is now seven-years-old.
