Berkeley Police Operation Aims To Reduce Motorcycle Fatalities

BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- With motorcycle fatalities an issue in California, the Berkeley Police Department worked to reduce deaths and injuries with a special safety operation Saturday, police said.

Extra patrols were stationed in areas where motorcycle crashes often happen, and officers cracked down on motorcycle and other vehicle traffic violations that often lead to motorcycle collisions, injuries and deaths, police said.

Data has shown that the causes of motorcycle-involved crashes often are speeding, unsafe turning and driving under the influence.

Another major factor leading to crashes is inexperienced riders, police said.

California is one of the top states for motorcycle deaths, according to police.

Police are reminding all motorists to be alert and watch for motorcycles, especially when turning or changing lanes.

Rider training is available through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Motorcyclists interested in the program can call 1-877-RIDE or visit www.CA-msp.org.
