Man Shot In Buttocks During Attempted San Leandro Pot Robbery

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) - A man police believe was trying to steal marijuana from a small pot growing operation in unincorporated San Leandro was shot in the buttocks Tuesday, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

The owner of the marijuana grow near 159th Avenue and East 14th Street fired off at least one round during the robbery attempt, said Sgt. J.D. Nelson, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

A car that was speeding away as police arrived was eventually stopped at Estudillo Avenue near Interstate 580. Police found the gunshot victim inside the car and detained three other men for questioning.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

The victim suffered minor injuries and is expected to survive.

Police discovered the marijuana after the pursuit. They would not specify how many plants were found, saying only that it was not a large scale operation.

The incident did however prompt a large police response and part of westbound I-580 was closed before dawn because of the investigation.

Nelson said the incident is under investigation and no arrests had been made as of 11 a.m.
