Clarion Hotel To House Returning San Jose State Students

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – The Clarion Hotel has agreed to provide rooms for returning San Jose State University students who cannot be assigned to the dorms because of this year’s large freshman class.

Every one of the 4,000 freshmen enrolling this fall must live on campus, a long-standing university policy adopted after studies found a correlation rate between graduation and the proximity of student housing to a school.

A school normally enrolls less than 3,000 freshmen suddenly found itself with a housing crisis for a handful of returning students also required to live in university facilities because their homes are more than 30 miles from campus.

“We have a bumper crop of freshman this fall,” said university spokeswoman Pat Lopes-Harris.

KCBS’ Mike Colgan Reports:

The university announced earlier this summer that some returning students would be offered hotel accommodations instead.

The Fourth Street location is three miles from campus near a light rail stop. Clarion guests were wary that an influx of college students might create a rowdier atmosphere in a hotel geared towards business travelers.

Front desk supervisor Steven Alcocer downplayed their concerns. He said the Clarion welcomed the 100 students and looked forward to its partnership with San Jose State.

“We’re very happy to work with the university on this,” he said.

Alas, the students will not be allowed to order room service.
