Concord Sex Offender Arrested In Napa Abduction Attempt

CONCORD (CBS SF) - A registered sex offender from Concord was arrested Thursday on suspicion of trying to force a woman into his car, a Napa County sheriff's captain said.

The woman was pushing her 2-year-old daughter in a stroller on the east shoulder of northbound State Highway 29 just south of American Canyon Road around 1:50 p.m., sheriff's Capt. Tracey Stuart said.

A man in a red car pulled in front of her, got out of the car and offered her a ride, Stuart said.

When she refused, the man grabbed her and tried to force her into his car, Stuart said.

The woman broke free and noted the car's license plate. When detectives showed her several photos, she identified 63-year-old Paul Webster as the suspect, Stuart said.

Detectives went to Webster's home in Concord and arrested him when he arrived, Stuart said.

Webster was booked into the Napa County Jail on suspicion of kidnapping, false imprisonment and endangering the life of a child, Stuart said. He is being held under no bail.

According to the Megan's Law website, Webster has been convicted of indecent exposure and two sex offenses with a child under age 16.
