Contra Costa County Threatens To Impose Contract On Managers Union
MARTINEZ (KCBS) - Contra Costa County supervisors on Tuesday gave the union representing its management staff one more week to concede to $3 million in cuts, threatening to impose a contract if no compromise was reached by Aug. 16.
The supervisors said Contra Costa cannot afford to prolong negotiations on a contract that expired in March. The union rejected what the city expected to be its final offer.
"The longer we wait to achieve cost savings, the more we will have to cut," said Supervisor John Gioia. He predicted layoffs and service cuts if the union could not come to terms on a deal.

Sue Guest, president of the Professional & Technical Engineers Local 21 that represents 800 managerial staffers, insisted the county had other avenues to realize the savings it wanted without concessions from the union.
"It is blatantly apparent to me that sacrifices will not be shared," she said.
Contra Costa County has not imposed a contract on one of its unions since the 1980s.
