Alameda County Redoubles Efforts To End Violence Against Children

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – In the past decade in Alameda County, more than 230 children under the age of 18 have died by violence. The latest being a 3-year-old boy, killed in Oakland in a daytime drive-by shooting. Now, the Alameda County District Attorney says cooperation among various agencies is required to quell rising gun violence.

When a child dies a violent death in Alameda County a flag is flown at half staff. In the spring a tree is planted in his or her memory. And in the fall a memorial is erected outside the administration building.

KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:

"When innocent people are killed there's just that much more effort to make sure we stop this violence, and stop the gun violence," said Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Mally. "All of us need to come together to create a comprehensive plan to combat this violence that is being perpetuated on our citizens."

O'Mally said that community-driven response should include law enforcement, community groups, the prosecutor's office and the U.S. attorney.
