Outlook Brightens For Pleasanton Animal Shelter

PLEASANTON (KCBS) – The head of the Valley Humane Society in Pleasanton said donations in the past two weeks have been unprecedented, allowing the animal shelter to remain open through November.

The shelter was in precarious financial shape earlier this summer. But since announcing last month that it might have to shut down operations, the organization has received more than $250,000 in donations.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

"People really came through," said Valley Humane Society Executive Director Melanie Sadek. "We honestly had no idea we would get the support that we've gotten. It's been really heartwarming."

Sadek said expenses have risen since the shelter has a "no kill" policy.

Corporate donations are down 30 percent because of the difficult economic times.

Sadek said several more fundraisers are scheduled in the coming weeks.
