Good Question: How Much Do Unregistered Cars Cost California?

(CBS 5) -- At a time when the state could use each cent it can get, revenue from DMV fees can really add up. In this Good Question: How much is California losing to residents who drive with out-of-state plates?

ANSWER: According to the Jan Mendoza of the Department of Motor Vehicles, California is losing tens of millions of dollars from drivers who fail to properly register their out of state cars when they move to California.

State law allows drivers who move into California only 20 days to register their vehicles without penalty. The state has set up a web site to report out of state vehicles operating in California.
