Man Who Shot Himself During Concord Traffic Stop Identified

CONCORD (CBS SF) - A man who shot and killed himself during a traffic stop in Concord on Thursday has been identified as 59-year-old San Ramon resident David Leon, a Contra Costa County coroner's deputy said Friday.

A California Highway Patrol officer saw Leon driving east on state Highway 4 near Port Chicago Highway at about 9:20 a.m. and believed he was impaired, Concord police Lt. Steve Dyer said.

When the officer initiated a traffic stop, Leon exited onto southbound Port Chicago Highway and pulled over near Panoramic Drive.

When the officer went to talk to him, Leon, who was alone in the car, allegedly shot himself, Dyer said.

He was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Concord, where he died from his injuries.

Because an officer was present when Leon shot himself, the case is considered a fatal officer-involved incident. The CHP, Concord police and the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office are investigating the death.

Southbound Port Chicago Highway was closed to traffic between Panoramic Drive and Arnold Industrial Way for about five hours Thursday during the investigation.

The off-ramp from eastbound state Highway 4 to Port Chicago Highway was also closed.
