Vacaville Police Thwart Attempted Suicide

VACAVILLE (CBS SF) - Vacaville police thwarted a suicide attempt by convincing a woman who was threatening to kill herself by jumping off an Interstate Highway 80 overpass Thursday night to come down.

Police received a phone call from a concerned man who said his 19-year-old girlfriend was planning to jump off the Allison Drive overpass around 11:20 p.m., according to police.

Officers arrived and found the woman standing on the concrete ledge of the I-80 overpass. Police said she was holding onto a chain link fence that separated her from officers.

The California Highway Patrol and police shut down westbound I-80. Paramedics from the Vacaville Fire Department brought a ladder truck to the nearby Nugget Markets grocery store at 130 Brown Valley Parkway.

A police officer approached the woman and began to talk to her. After about 15 minutes of negotiation, the officer convinced the 19 year old to come down, police said.

The ladder truck was used to safely bring the woman to the ground, police said. She was taken to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Vacaville, where she received crisis support services.

Vacaville police remind the community that there are resources available for those feeling depressed or suicidal.

Those seeking assistance can call Solano County Mental Health at (707) 428-1131 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255. Both agencies are available to provide help 24 hours a day.
