Desert Roadtrippers, Part Four
What a long strange trip it’s been….and we’ve still got two days of our desert road trip to go! Today, the fearless threesome (now being referred to by the crew as “BLT” — Brian Liam and Thuy) take something of a break from the miles and settle into a mini-vacation in beautiful Palm Springs.
Liam takes a tour of this swingin’ town with a local who used to be OUR local — Hank Plante! This legendary KPIX newsman has traded in his signature suit and tie for a closetful of Tommy Bahama shirts and cargo shorts, and is living the good life in Palm Springs. He takes Liam on a tour of downtown Palm Springs and, past the homes of celebrities, past and present — Liberace, Elvis, and….the Big Man himself, Frank Sinatra. Wait til you see his piano-shaped pool at his stylin’ pad (which you can rent, by the way)…
Meanwhile, Thuy and Brian catch a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tram….a ride that lifts folks nearly 6,000 feet in 10 minutes….one of our hosts packed a jacket — the other…well, she shivered. You’ll see some the amazing views Thuy and Brian soaked in from the top of Chino Canyon looking out to the vast desert below.

Then, Brian and Thuy get blown away — almost literally — when they visit a wind farm — a sea of windmills capitalizing on the valley’s two-way breezes….forget maintaining that perfect host hair, just try to stay standing…
Meanwhile, Liam checks out a signature stage show — the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies — where the stars of the show prove how spry you can be in your silver years. Every dancer is 55 or older — many in their 70s and still singing and dancing through 9 shows a week! Liam gets a backstage pass to hang with the Follies ladies — you’ll have to watch to see who makes who giggle louder…

All three hosts reunite for some well-earned pampering and luxury “down time” at the posh Hyatt Grand Champions hotel….foot massages at the spa, margaritas in the lounge, and off to bed…because the last — and by far weirdest — day of the desert road trip is just around the corner…
