Eye On The Bay: Desert Roadtrippers Pt.5 – 8/26/11

Desert Roadtrippers, Part Five

Dead fish, sputtering mud, and a jackpot

Our 5-day, 1500-mile desert road trip odyssey comes to an end in a most bizarre place – The Salton Sea. Parts of this largest lake in California look like something out of the apocalypse – dead fish, dead RVs, and crumbling homes. Brian, Liam, and Thuy drive from Palm Springs to the Salton Sea and take in the strange sights. Then, Liam and Thuy try the famous patty melts at the wonderfully weird Ski Inn at Bombay Beach.

Then, Thuy and Liam climb colorful Salvation Mountain…a hill covered in a rainbow of thousands of gallons of paint….and, Liam sits down and talks with the man who built the mountain, Leonard Knight. Truly a sight like no other.

Meanwhile, Brian discovers the mysterious mud pots of the Salton Sea…where gooey earth gurgles and splooshes out of what look like giant anthills in a remote field near the lake.

Back in Indio, our intrepid threesome toast their completed journey at the Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino, and spend their last cash in the slots, hoping for a win (and some gas money) to get home with. What a trip!
