Final Shipment Of Bay Bridge Steel To Arrive By Monday

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - When a ship from China arrives by next Monday, Caltrans crews will have all of the components in place to assemble the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge.

The final shipment en route from Shanghai, China consists of the sections that will make up the deck of the bridge, said Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney.

"All of the parts will be here now to finish the bridge," Ney said.

KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:

Motorists will notice some major changes over the next several months. First the suspension span's cables will be lifted into place. Then nearly 5,000 tons of steel will go up.

Ney said construction is about six months ahead of schedule, with the new eastern span on track to open in 2013.
