Yuba County Group Sues To Block San Francisco Trash

MARYSVILLE (CBS / AP) -- A group of Yuba County residents have sued to stop San Francisco from sending its trash to their landfill.

The city recently signed a 10-year, $112 million deal with landfill owner Recology to begin sending its trash to the facility near Wheatland beginning in 2015.

But many local residents oppose the idea of trucking garbage more than 100 miles to dump next to farmland.

In the lawsuit filed Thursday in San Francisco Superior Court, Yuba Group Against Garbage said city officials improperly approved the deal without first doing an environmental impact assessment.

Recology spokesman Adam Alberti said the company wasn't required to study the environmental impacts.

The San Francisco Department of the Environment, which awarded the contract to Recology, said no one there was available to comment Friday.
