Half Moon Bay Appeals For Help Fighting Gang Activity

HALF MOON BAY (KCBS) -- Officials with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department and the City of Half Moon Bay want residents to help fight gang activity and graffiti.

The coastal community is known for its beaches, historic downtown and annual pumpkin festival, not gang activity. However, two men were injured two weeks ago in what authorities believe was a gang-related shooting.

San Mateo County Sheriff's Lieutenant Lisa Williams said such shootings are very unusual for Half Moon Bay, and she added action should be taken immediately to prevent further violence.

KCBS' Melissa Culross Reports:

The San Mateo County Sheriff and members of the Half Moon Bay City Council will hold a community meeting Tuesday night to get residents involved and inform them of the Sheriff's long-term effort to combat gang violence.

"It includes accountability, holding these kids and these gang members accountable for their actions," Williams said. "It includes education through the schools and community meetings."

The meeting will be at the Ted Adcock Community Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. with Spanish Language translators available for anyone who needs them.
