Sunnyvale Man Arrested In Fatal Hit-&-Run Of Elderly Woman

SUNNYVALE (KCBS) - Sunnyvale police have arrested a man whose car they say veered onto a sidewalk Wednesday and struck an elderly woman who later died from injuries she sustained in the crash.

The woman in her 70s was hit from behind on Homestead Road near MacKenzie Drive several blocks from Homestead High School at about 7:20 a.m. The driver did not stop.

"The vehicle continued away from the scene, fled the scene and the lady victim was found on the sidewalk with major trauma," said Capt. Dave Verbrugge.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

Verbrugge happened to be riding his bicycle in the area and was the second officer on the scene.

The woman was rushed to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Her name has not been released while authorities contact her family to notify them.

Verbrugge said patrol officers located a vehicle matching the description given by an eye witness in a nearby shopping mall.

The man in custody is a resident of Sunnyvale but police were not yet releasing his name. Officers were investigating the circumstances of the collision and have not yet determined whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call police at (408) 730-7110.

Verbrugge said neither the victim nor the driver were affiliated with Homestead High School.
