High-Tech Companies Could Play Major Role In SF Mayor’s Race

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The San Francisco mayoral race is shaping up to be one like no other as for the first time, high-tech companies are stepping up to the plate with big donations.

Political insiders said they saw this coming for awhile, especially after major tax breaks were handed out to companies like Twitter and Zynga earlier this year to keep them in town.

KCBS’ Mark Seelig Reports:

Democratic strategist Nathan Ballard said the one who’s benefiting the most right now is Ed Lee, because he’s the one who’s been at the forefront of these business-friendly policies.

“They decided, we know him, we know he’s helped us out with tax breaks in the past, so let’s organize around him,” Ballard said.

In fact, Ron Conway, a major investor in Twitter, has developed a political action committee called San Franciscans for Jobs and Good Government, which is now raising funds on behalf of Lee.

“There undoubtedly will be other efforts supporting other campaigns,” said consultant Brian Brokaw. “But the bottom line is that this particular committee will spend what it takes to support Ed Lee.”

Officials with Twitter, Zynga and other high-tech companies are also actively raising funds for candidates like David Chiu and John Avalos.

Political analysts said high-tech executives have long been active on the campaign front, especially on the national scale.

But they said this is the first time they can remember these companies paying particular notice to a mayor’s race.
