Fairfax Father Arrested After Baby Left Alone In Car Outside Bar

FAIRFAX (CBS SF) -- A Woodacre man is being held on $50,000 bail in Marin County Jail after he was arrested Monday afternoon on suspicion of child cruelty for allegedly leaving a baby unattended in a warm car, authorities said.

Sergei Andrey Tchelakov, 47, was arrested by Fairfax police at 765 Center Blvd., the location of the Iron Springs Pub & Brewery, at about 2:50 p.m. Monday, a police sergeant said.

Officers were flagged down by someone who noticed that a child had been left alone in a car on what was a warm afternoon, Sgt. James O'Callaghan said.

The 1-year-old boy was not injured, and was taken into custody by a relative, he said.

The Marin County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case and deciding whether to file charges.

According to the jail's booking log, Tchelakov is a soccer coach.

Fairfax police Chief Christopher Morin told the Marin Independent Journal witnesses reported the baby was strapped into a car seat with the windows up around 1:40 p.m. near a Fairfax brewery. It was almost 80 degrees outside.

The newspaper said after witnesses confronted the father, he went to the car, rolled the windows down partially and went back inside. That's when witnesses contacted police.

Morin said the baby did not require hospitalization and was picked up by his mother.
