Danville Man Ruled Insane In Mother Baseball Bat Killing

MARTINEZ (CBS/AP) - A Danville man accused of beating his mother to death with a baseball bat has been ruled legally insane at the time of the slaying.

A Contra Costa County judge made the determination on Monday in the case against 21-year-old Andrew Mantas. Mantas was facing life behind bars, but could now spend the rest of his life at a mental health institution.

Authorities said Mantas attacked his mother, Dimitra Mantas, with the bat at her home in November 2006. He had apparently been hearing voices.

Mantas pleaded guilty to the slaying on Monday before waiving a jury trial and allowing the judge to decide his sanity.
