Tech Report: Facebook Homepage Changes Causes Furor

PALO ALTO (KCBS) – Facebook has once again tweaked its homepage, causing quite a furor among its millions of users.

Among the changes: what Facebook is calling "Top Stories" appears on the top of user's homepages, followed by "Recent Stories" listed in chronological order. There is also a "Ticker" on the right side of the page, a live feed of all ongoing activity from friends.

KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid:

KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid said he understands why the changes haven't gone over well.

"I don't know if the changes are better or worse, I haven't really figured that out yet. But I do know that they're different," Magid said. "And for those of us accustomed to doing things a certain way, it's jarring. Frankly, a lot of people are getting tired of all these changes."

Magid said that while many people don't understand the changes, they are reasonable as Facebook looks to keep up with the competition.

"In defense, they have Google right on their heels. If they don't innovate, they're going to die. But if they innovate too much, that could also harm them," he said.

Expect even more changes in the next few days as Facebook is hosting a developer's conference in San Francisco on Thursday.

You can hear Larry Magid's Tech Report Monday through Friday at 3:50pm on KCBS All News 740AM and 106.9FM.
