UC Davis Chancellor Plans Student Increase To Combat Cuts

DAVIS (CBS/AP) - The chancellor of the University of California's Davis campus is proposing a major increase in the size of the school's student body to compensate for cuts in state funding.

Chancellor Linda Katehi's plan calls for expanding UC Davis' undergraduate population of 24,700 by 5,000 students over the next five years. She announced it Wednesday during the university's annual back-to-school convocation.

Katehi said the proposal only is in the very early planning stage. A significant detail that needs to be worked out is what share of the additional undergraduate slots would go to U.S. residents from other states and international students, both of whom pay higher fees than California residents.

She said the money from a bigger student body would help Davis hire 300 more tenure-track professors.
