California School Districts, Education Groups Sue State Over Funding Cuts

SAN JOSE (CBS/AP) – School districts and education groups are suing the state of California to restore more than $2 billion in funding they say districts are owed under state law.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in San Francisco Superior Court by the California School Boards Association, Association of California School Administrators and school districts in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Turlock.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

The complaint seeks the restoration of $2.1 billion in school funding that was cut from the 2011-2012 state budget. Plaintiffs say districts are owed that money under Proposition 98, a 1988 voter initiative that guarantees California public schools a minimum level of funding.

State Department of Finance spokesman H.D. Palmer said Gov.  Jerry Brown's administration believes the courts will find the actions taken to balance the state budget are legal and appropriate.
