Pilot Of Homemade Plane Killed In Crash Near Salinas

MONTEREY COUNTY (CBS SF) — The pilot of a single-engine airplane died Thursday night when the plane crashed in Monterey County, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

The homebuilt airplane departed from Salinas Municipal Airport and crashed at a vineyard in Chualar at around 7 p.m., according to FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The pilot was reportedly the only person on board and the plane was destroyed in the crash, Gregor said.

The circumstances of the crash were not immediately known. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
