UC Berkeley Tallies Rise in Hate Crimes

BERKELEY (KCBS) - The Univerity of California, Berkeley campus, long considered a bastion of liberalism, is tallying a rise in hate crimes, suggesting increasing intolerance on campus for religious differences and ethnicity.

According to the university's latest annual security report, compiled by campus police, there were three times as many hate crimes reported in 2010, compared with figures from 2009.

Specifically, in 2010 there were 22 hate crimes reported, whereas in 2009 there were just 6 hate crimes reported.

Ahead of the 2010 crime report, UC Berkeley expanded its policies on hate crime statistics to include reports of vandalism deemed to be hateful in nature.

KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:

"It probably is underreported," theorized Cal student Ross Oviatt about hate crimes on his campus. "So I think the increase is, I'm hoping that it's just people who are courageous enough to come forward and that we're not going in the wrong direction."
