Sunnyvale Armory May Become Permanent Homeless Housing

SUNNYVALE (KCBS) – With the rainy season starting up, finding shelter for the homeless becomes more critical and plans are now in the works to turn a Sunnyvale armory into an affordable housing project.

The Sunnyvale armory has been used as a winter shelter for the past 20 years, and now the city is working on a deal to sell the site to a shelter provider. That would create permanent affordable housing, which is desperately needed in the area.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Report:

"There are only 1,000 emergency shelter beds during the cold winter months, and there's 7,000 people who are on the streets on any given night," said Jennifer Van Every, with EHC Lifebuilders, the largest shelter provider in the county.

She said that the need is always ratcheted up this time of year.

"It's very important to provide homeless individuals and families with shelter during the cold winter months. It's important that they get off of the streets, and into a safe and dry place. It's critical to their health and safety."
