49ers Santa Clara Stadium Project May Break Ground By Spring

SANTA CLARA (KCBS) - The new San Francisco 49ers' stadium project in Santa Clara appears to be off and running - much like a no-huddle offense - with the first shovels expected to hit the dirt in just a few months.

Even though much of the financing has yet to be identified, the team has announced that construction around the stadium is now slated to begin as early as spring of 2012.

"We are trying to move it along, we have made commitments to have the stadium open by the 2015 football season. We're making really great progress and I think hopefully the public will be as excited about this as we are," declared Santa Clara Assistant City Manager Carol McCarthy.

McCarthy said they're getting ready for stadium "prep" work.

"The site itself is just a parking lot. And we have a lot of work to do to get it ready to start this major stadium construction project. We've got to get sewer lines, other utilities in place, we have to move some power structures, we have to prep and do some groundwork so that the big machines and the big supplies can come in."

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

The 68,000 seat stadium will be built next to the Great America amusement park.
