Warehouse Fire Burns Near 580/24 In Oakland; 1 Hurt

OAKLAND (KCBS) - A man was hospitalized with smoke inhalation after a warehouse went up in flames near Interstate 580 and Highway 24 in Oakland Thursday.

The small warehouse that burned had been converted to a live-work space and commuters had no trouble spotting the smoky fire.

The man inside the building on the 3700 block of West Street was rushed away by an ambulance as firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control.

Battalion Chief Emon Usher said the flames smoldered for a while only to flare up suddenly.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

At the hospital, the man who had been inside when the fire started around 7:30 a.m. was treated for smoke inhalation. Authorities have not released his name.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Usher said it was not immediately clear whether the warehouse had been zoned for residential use.
