Tech Report: Will ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ Satisfy Smartphone Users?
SANTA CLARA (KCBS) – Google and Samsung have teamed up to unveil the first smartphone running the new version of the Android operating system, known as “Ice Cream Sandwich.”
This comes after the release of new operating systems for both the Apple and Blackberry platforms. KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid said that the three OSs are similar in several ways. For example, all three platforms have one operating system for both smartphones and tablets.
“This is a big deal for the Google world, for the Android world because Androids are very fragmented,” said Magid. “There are so many different Androids out there, and there is a totally different version for tablets than there is for smartphones so at least now there will be one operating system for tablets and smartphones.”
Magid said that the other difference is that there are more bells and whistles, along with a faster processor.
KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid Comments:
”They’ve cleaned up the interface,” said Magid. “They’ve created a whole new font for it, so it’s going to be a lot prettier. I’m hoping this makes it a little less clunky. I love Android, and I think it’s great but comparing it to an iPhone is sort of like comparing an awkward teenager with a sophisticated adult. They both can do a lot of things, but the adult just does them a little more smoothly. No offense to teenagers, but lets face it, the iPhone is a little older and a little more mature. So maybe Android is growing up a little bit here.”
