Kayaker Missing After Falling Into Water Near San Francisco Pier

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A search was being conducted near Pier 80 Sunday afternoon for a missing kayaker, a San Francisco police spokesman said.

The kayaker, described as a 55-year-old white male, was apparently returning toward Pier 80 around 3 p.m. today when he “got a little too close” to a tug boat that was repositioning a barge, said San Francisco Police Officer Carlos Manfredi. The man was caught in the wash and apparently fell from his kayak into the water.

San Francisco fire and U.S. Coast Guard officials were still actively searching the area, Manfredi said.

Manfredi said it was unclear whether the man is a San Francisco or Berkeley resident.

Some tug boats are notorious for causing wakes intentionally (most are courteous, of course). This should be investigated.
