City To Return Medical Supplies To ‘Occupy Oakland’ Protesters

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — Oakland city officials said they plan to return first aid and medical supplies taken from the Occupy Oakland encampment by police last week.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Jean Quan said Sunday evening that the city had located the supplies and planned to return them to the camp Monday morning.

A statement claiming to come from medics working at the camp was released earlier today demanding the return of the supplies and threatening to occupy Quan’s office if they were not returned. The person who sent out the statement has not responded to phone calls or emails.

City officials said earlier Sunday that a Saturday march of Occupy Oakland demonstrators through the city’s downtown district protesting alleged police brutality was mostly peaceful and free of confrontations with police.

The city is investigating some instances of vandalism and graffiti that were reported during the demonstration, mayor’s spokeswoman Sue Piper said in an email today.

The Oakland Fire Department is making daily fire inspections at Frank Ogawa Plaza, Piper said.

Police continue to have a minimal presence at the plaza.

The city is also investigating reports that demonstrators poured water on media reporters, Piper said.

In advance of a general strike called for Wednesday, city officials are reassuring residents that all essential city services will continue to be maintained.

If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics.

NeilSalemMA Why does all this remind me of France in the 1780s and 1790s?

Our system of free enterprise is a corrupt oligarchy of the wealthy that drives more and more middle class Americans into poverty, even while the very rich get much richer. As happened over 200 years ago in France, the people will eventually rise up.

These people need to “occupy” a name tag and go the hell home and to work! All they are doing is wasting the city’s money and resources. They are becoming what they are against. Needless spending… and I don’t see any of them being held accountable for the tax dollars they’re wasting!!!!
