Santa Clara County Cities Recognized For Efforts To Curb Secondhand Smoke

SANTA CLARA (KCBS)— The percentage of smokers in Santa Clara County is now down to ten percent according to a recent survey and it continues to drop. A number of cities in Silicon Valley are being recognized by the Tobacco Free Coalition for their efforts to curb smoking.

Five jurisdictions including; San Jose, Cupertino, Saratoga, Campbell, and the County itself are coming out on top in the fight against tobacco use.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

County Public Health Department Spokeswoman Amy Cornell said the real goal of adopting smoke-free parks and recreational areas is eliminating second-hand smoke.

Cornell said Cupertino is working hard on pursuing a local tobacco retail licensing ordinance in addition to other efforts.

She affirmed that secondhand smoke exposure is something that the public health department takes very seriously.

"This is a good way of reminding people in the community how important it is to implement such policies and be able to live in a smoke-free environment. This is crucial for the health of the entire community," Cornell said.
