Child Killed, Another Hurt In Crash Involving Vallejo Garbage Truck

VALLEJO (KCBS) – An 11-year-old boy who was skateboarding with a another child died Friday afternoon after crashing into a Vallejo garbage truck.

The child, and an 8-year-old boy were riding on a skateboard on Pembrook Drive near Linfield Drive around 12:30 p.m. when the accident with the Recology Vallejo garbage truck occurred, Battalion Chief Kathryn Harpold said.

The older boy was taken to Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center where he died and the younger boy was flown to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, Harpold said.

Family members were at the scene, Harpold said.

The accident happened near the Elsa Widenmann Elementary School at 100 Whitney Ave. that was closed for the Veterans Day holiday, Harpold said.

Vallejo police, who are investigating the accident, were not available for comment.

I feel so sorry for the parents of that boy, but it still just amazes me how stupid kids can be. I see older kids on skateboards just flying down the street thinking that the whole world will see them and avoid them. But 2 on 1 board and you know that they weren’t wearing helmets. Skateboards don’t have steering wheels or brakes.

I suppose you were a perfect kid and never did anything stupid.

this should be removed! Boo to the editors for not taking this down, yes kids do dumb stuff, but this is a tragedy and you have underscored that, how would you feel if your kid was involved?

At 123: When you were a child, haven’t you done or known anyone close to you who did anything silly, dangerous or reckless? Give the families a break and think about it before you talk (write). The difference is you were fortunate enough to live through it. Unfortunately, this kid did not. It’s always easy to say “I told you so.” Try the road lesser traveled. Show a little compassion instead of cynical finger-pointing. Just saying.

Vallejo has a police department? I thought they went bankrupt because of greedy demands from the “public” servants.

Better to get full pay & benefits, than teach Johnny not to skate by & under garbage trucks.
