California Recalls, Quarantines Raw Milk Products

FRESNO (CBS / AP) — California officials are recalling and putting under quarantine raw organic milk from a Fresno County company after it was linked to E. coli that sent three California children to the hospital.

California State Veterinarian Dr. Annette Whiteford ordered all milk, butter, cream, colostrum and “Qephor” by Organic Pastures Dairy Company pulled from the shelves.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced Tuesday that laboratory samples of Organic Pastures raw milk have not detected the particular strain of E. coli. But interviews with the families of five children infected with the strain between August and October indicate the only common food exposure was unpasteurized milk.

Three of the children were hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a condition that may lead to kidney failure. No deaths are associated with the recall.

All tests on OPD milk have been negative for the ecoli strain found in the children … so there is NO linking the illnesses to the dairy. Out of 75000 consumers who drank the same milk we are to believe that this dairy which has a pristine record and goes way beyond state regulations is automatically the source of illness? Why did the CDFA wait so long (2 months!) to warn the public? Why will it not consider, even remotely, other foods or beverages consumed by these children or even their health history? Why is it that raw food industries are always considered guilty before proven innocent by gov’t and media reporting? My friend’s child just recently ended up in the hosp with severe food poisoning (so did several other children) after eating at a McDonald’s restaurant. Did the FDA close McDonald’s down or even this one franchise until their investigation was over? No! This seems so hypocritical to me. Government agencies are using little children who have been injured by contaminated food, or something, as a vehicle to bring down a growing competitive healthy food industry and consumer choice. Once again, all tests have been negative and yet government and media is still accusing OPD of being at fault. This is so wrong!

They have no proof!! They need to lift the quarantine now. This is ridiculous. I can’t stand these government agencies.

most strains of e coli are from pasteurized products, not raw milk. the beneficial bacteria in the raw milk helps protect it from food borne illnesses. that’s why it’s so safe and healthy! yum!
