San Francisco Spear Fisherman Pierced By Own Spear On Sonoma Coast

FORT ROSS (CBS SF) -- A 45-year-old San Francisco man with a fishing spear stuck in his leg was rescued from the rocks along the Sonoma coast on Saturday, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.

About 2:20 p.m., the sheriff's office responded to state Highway 1 near Fort Ross on a report of a man with a spear gun injury.

The victim was stranded on the rocks at the bottom of a 75-foot ocean cliff with a spear stuck in his left thigh.

The man had been spear fishing with his friends when he was hit by a wave while swimming to shore, according to the sheriff's office. The force of the wave slammed him up against some rocks, and caused the spear gun to pierce his leg.

A sheriff's helicopter crew responded and pulled the victim off the rocks with a long-line rescue. He was loaded into the helicopter at the top off the cliff and flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

He is expected to survive the injury.
