Gunman Shoots Albany Cigarette Store Clerk During Robbery

ALBANY (CBS SF) - A clerk at an Albany cigarette store was shot during an attempted robbery on Monday evening, police said.

Around 5:54 p.m. police responded to Cigarette Discounters at 1079 San Pablo Ave. after a report of an attempted robbery. When officers arrived at the store they found the clerk had been shot, yet conscious and alert, police said.

Medical personnel transported the clerk to Highland Hospital in Oakland where the he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive his injuries, police said.

The victim told police one suspect entered the store and a second suspect came in shortly thereafter with a gun.

The unarmed suspect went behind the counter and tried to open the cash register. The clerk then activated the store's panic alarm and the second suspect shot the clerk, according to police.

Both suspects exited the store and fled south on San Pablo Avenue and turned east on Dartmouth Street.

The suspects are described as two black males, one about 30 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with medium build and a dark complexion. One suspect was last seen wearing a black hoodie with the hood up and jeans while the second was wearing a white hoodie with a white T-shirt and jeans, police said.
