2 Earthquakes Shake Up Monterey, Santa Cruz Areas

MONTEREY (CBS SF) -- The U.S. Geological Survey has reported that a second small earthquake struck Friday morning just outside of Monterey County.

The first quake had a preliminary magnitude of 3.0 and shook an area approximately 6 miles east-northeast of Prunedale at 10:53 a.m., according to the USGS. It had a depth of 3.4 miles.

A second tremor with a preliminary magnitude of 2.8 originated in approximately the same area at 11:39 a.m., according to the USGS.

Shaking was felt from the larger quake across Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Juan Bautista counties, with people from Aptos to Salinas filing reports of weak to light shaking.

As of 1:30 p.m., 17 people in nine different ZIP codes had responded on the USGS website that they sensed the larger quake. Fewer people reported feeling the smaller earthquake, with only two posted responses—one in Salnias and one in San Ramon—on the USGS website.
