Dead Infant Found In Trash Bin In Central Valley Gas Station

WATERFORD, Stanislaus County (CBS/AP) -- Authorities were searching for the mother of a dead infant whose body was found in a trash bin at a Stanislaus County gas station.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said a man who was searching for aluminum cans in a small garbage can next to the gas pumps at the Bait Barn station on Highway 132 in the town of Waterford found a baby wrapped in a blanket at 9:22 p.m.

The man told 911 dispatchers that the baby appeared lifeless.  When fire department responders arrived at the scene, the baby was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday, and authorities were trying to determine if the child was stillborn or died after birth.

Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said investigators were checking hospitals for records on recently pregnant women. They're also concerned that the mother may be in danger.
