CBS 5 Poll: Quan's Approval Rating Up Amidst Recall Effort

OAKLAND (CBS 5) -- In the midst of a recall effort, a new KPIX-TV CBS 5 poll found the approval rating for Oakland Mayor Jean Quan has actually improved in recent weeks -- although a majority of residents still disapprove of her job performance.

The poll results show 64% of Oakland residents currently disapprove of the overall job Quan is doing in office, however that's an improvement from last month's CBS 5 tracking poll that showed a 71% disapproval rating.

Signature-gathering is under way on a petition to recall Quan after the city clerk certified it on Wednesday. Backers have until May 14 to collect roughly 20,000 valid signatures of registered Oakland voters to qualify the measure for the ballot.

Recall supporters contend that Quan has not done enough to reduce crime and create jobs, but Quan said in a statement sent to CBS San Francisco on Thursday night that she is focused on jobs, public safety and education to move the city forward.

"Regardless of the outcome of the process that began yesterday, I will not allow it to distract me from my job as Mayor," she said.

This latest CBS 5 poll also found that a plurality of Oakland residents, 47%, favor the recall of Quan right now. That compared to 34% who oppose it and 19% who were unsure about the measure.

The poll was conducted for KPIX by the firm SurveyUSA, which polled 500 Oakland residents on Dec. 8. The poll has a marin of error of plus or minus 4.3%.
