Sharp Park Golf Course Closure In Mayor Lee's Hands

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has given final approval to a measure that environmentalists hope will result in the closure of Sharp Park Golf Course in Pacifica.

The legislation requires the Recreation and Parks Department to enter into a long-term agreement with the National Park Service to manage the land at Sharp Park. That would mean an end to the golf course, owned by the City of San Francisco.

Now it's time for Mayor Ed Lee to decide whether to veto the measure. He's repeatedly said he wants the golf course to remain in it's current location.

"I think there's room to protect the species that are there and run a well-managed golf course," said Lee.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

Preservationists contend that the golf course adversely affects the San Francisco garter snake, an endangered species, and the California red-legged frog, a threatened species.

Meanwhile, San Mateo County, which wants to keep the golf course, has also been angling to manage the land. Mayor Lee supported bringing San Mateo into the mix, but without that happening a veto is his only option to guarantee that the golf course, which has been around since 1932, won't be closed down.
