Gerard Butler Rescued While Filming Surf Movie At Mavericks

HALF MOON BAY (CBS/AP) – Actor Gerard Butler is OK after being rescued during filming for a movie at Mavericks, a treacherous surf break off the Half Moon Bay coast known for stories-high waves.

The 42-year-old “Of Men and Mavericks” star was held underwater Sunday afternoon when a set of 15-foot waves rolled in.

Filmmakers were shooting Butler paddling out with competitive surfers Greg Long, Zach Wormhoudt and Peter Mel.

A safety patrolman on a Jet Ski swooped in and picked up Butler.

Wormhouldt said the actor was shaken up but not seriously injured. Butler was taken by ambulance to Stanford Medical Center for examination, and he was later released.

“Of Men and Mavericks” is about Santa Cruz surfer Jay Moriarty, who conquered Mavericks as a teen but died in a free-diving accident in 2001 when he was 23.

Butler’s publicist Rupert Fowler didn’t immediately respond to an email message sent Tuesday.

Been to Mavericks. Very scarry break. Huge, pushy, nasty. Feels like either a great white or a wall are going to come up from the deeps at any second. I’ld go up to Rock-a-Way beach and have some fun instead. Have to much common sense to paddle out there now a days, unless i was pulling a Kavorkian!

    • Big Bear

I have serious hard-core surfer buddies who won’t do Mavericks. But they speak of it in reverent tones…

  • Point Break

The movie will get more buzz if he drowns. Put him back in the water.

    • Climp Jones

that or attacked by a great white or both and just for kicks gets caught in boats propeller during his rescue

  • glennmcgahee

Wait a minute. This guy’s playing a guy who drowned at the age of 23?

    • Christian Strama

No, if you look on IMDB he’s not the main character.

    • Curtis Quico Reed

that’s movie magic man…that’s how so many twenty-somethings play high school kids too

  • HH dogg

That is a bad as* break and no place for a hollywood light weight. That place has taken the life of one of the best. You’re dancing with the devil there dudes. Get Laird Hamilton or someone of that caliber to do the heavy lifting in that scene bros.

  • K DUBS

He should have told that wave that in his presence “all waves are responsible for what they say” and when it crashed on him he should have kicked it down a well and said….THIS … IS … MAVERICKS!!!

So desperate for material that they are making movies about 23 year olds whose great accomplishment is “conquering” waves…..and then drown in what I can only assume was probably a drunken or drug fueled diving accident. To hell in a hand basket just doesn’t quite cover it.

    • Hogmeister

You really should have a clue before posting nonsense, especially when it’s disrespectful to an awesome departed father, husband and human being. He died of a phenomenon known as shallow water blackout, something about which free divers are susceptible. I’d explain it to you, but from your post, it’s clear you wouldn’t understand, and won’t ever do anything like dive, surf, or really, anyway worth while, which is why you find it so much easier to sit on the sidelines and make snide remarks about people and things about which you know nothing.

Hollywood may indeed be bereft of good ideas, but you, Sir, are a complete loser.

    • TheDerelictDirector

When has Hollyweird ever made a movie worth watching? For every 150 filmed, 1 turns out to be decent. The remainder are absolute disasters.

  • rick shaw

I like this comment. Sums the Hollywood bums up nicely. So much out there to make a good movie, but no, it might be too moral, too family, too real.

  • Boo

Good they should charge his sorry ass good for this!

    • Mike A.

I’m pretty sure whoever is producing the movie would have been covering the cost…it’s not like he was surfing for fun and needed rescued. Or was bothering to read the article too much work.

  • Lordroot

Its a garbage break and suicidal due to the cold water and sharks. That’s all you need to raise the death toll is start to advertise this place like its the top of the surfing pyramid. It’s not; in fact it’s not even close.

  • Max

They don’t have memorials on benches surrounding Mavericks for nothing.

  • Jenni Smith

Stop prostitution and the ads they post

Should Have Drowned……Like A Big Wet Liberal Rat. Who’s Gonna Watch This Libby Drivel Movie Anyway? F**K Hollywood Jerk Off’s.

    • Hogmeister

Ah, Tom… Thanks once again for reminding us all of the ignorance embodied in most every conservative. Keep up the great work, and hey, nice work w/ that great set of Republican presidential candidates. So, they’re the cream of your crop, huh?… BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

    • Ashley

I dislike the liberals of Hollywood as well, but Butler has made no US political offiliations, don’t forget, he’s a Scottsman.. and a hot one…

    • JDW

“Submission? Well that’s a bit of a problem. See, rumor has it the Athenians have already turned you down, and if those philosophers and, uh, boy-lovers have found that kind of nerve, then…”

-Gerard Butler as King Leonidas, 300.

  • sailordude

    Surfing movies, how 60’s.

  • JDW

    “This isn’t Mavericks………..THIS! IS! SPART…….splrub…blurbb…wha….spurp-durp…tha….heeuuuvvveeeflrrbbbb…FUHK!!…..

  • Dale

That harbor dude has a nice stash, Borat would be very complimentary.

  • stechatte

Glad he’s ok. Would have been a huge waste of talent…um, even more than, say, doing a stupid surfer movie.

  • Ashley

I love me some Gerard Butler, glad he is ok… he is tooooo sexy to drown…
