Woman Dies After Found Clinging To Oakland Estuary Rocks; ID Sought
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - Oakland police were seeking help from the public to identify a woman who died after she was found clinging to rocks in the estuary along Jack London Square on Thursday.
Police released a photograph on Monday of the distinctive dress the woman was wearing when she was discovered without identification Thursday morning at the end of Clay Street, hoping that someone may recognize it.
Police described the victim as an African-American woman between 30 and 40 years old, standing five feet seven inches tall, and weighing 200 pounds. She had brown hair and brown eyes.
She was discovered still conscious and breathing in the water, and was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.
Watson said Thursday that it appeared the woman was in the water "for a while" before she was found.
The case was being investigated as a homicide, though police are still unsure what the cause of death was.
Police were working with the Alameda County coroner's office to determine whether her death was accidental or the result of foul play.
