CLOVIS, Fresno County (CBS/AP) — A Fresno man has been arrested after authorities discovered 19 starving horses on his leased San Joaquin Valley ranch.

One of the horses on the Clovis property was euthanized because it was in such bad shape.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been taking the other malnourished horses to private stables for care. Most of them were removed from the ranch on Wednesday.

An animal control official said that it’s one of the largest-ever animal cruelty cases in the Fresno area.

Investigators say 59-year-old Dana Thomas Kahler was arrested Tuesday and booked for investigation of felony animal abuse.

The  life insurance agent was released Wednesday on bond. He couldn’t be reached for comment.

Please every and anyone, if you cannot take care of your animals, please call the local Animal rescue groups or Humane Society. Drop them off do what ever. This is as terrible as leaving a baby in a garbage can, or throwing a dog out of a car! What is going on with these people?

Wow. As an animal lover my heart goes out to these poor babies. I own 2 horses and I could NEVER do this to them. I would give them away before I watched them starve :/ People would not be so quick to abuse animals if they got what they gave. This man would be crying if he didnt get fed for a day. If one was past the point of saving, it was 100s of pounds underweight. I have worked at a horse hospital so I have seen a lot of sick animals, but nothing disgusts me more than people that abuse animals. May he rot in jail.

I’ll never understand why all these folks who keep getting busted for large numbers of animals ( it’s always large properties:farms/mills/ranches) which are usually large sized and have value do this. They are adults and at some point decided to do this. Did they all wake up one day and forget they have horse/cows/pigs/dogs and more to feed? Do they hide in their house while they animals cry for food/water and to have clean place to lie down? How could they ignore all that? If they ran out of funds/food They would be calling for someone to come and get them, right? Do they have starving children in the house as well that they are hiding as well? Honestly, you would have to be mentally ill to do either/or/and these types of activities. Property, animals and kids are expensive and need constant care. Don’t get any of the three if you can’t deal with the cost or the upkeep. Lock this guy up, please.
