OAKLAND (CBS SF) – Left-hander Gio Gonzalez says the Washington Nationals have agreed to acquire him in a trade with the Oakland Athletics, pending a physical and the deal being finalized.

Gonzalez has been the subject of trade talk all offseason by the A’s, who on Dec. 9 traded fellow top-tier starter Trevor Cahill to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 26-year-old Gonzalez, a first-round draft pick taken 38th overall by the Chicago White Sox in 2004, confirmed the trade to The Associated Press on Thursday. He went 16-12 last season—a career high for wins after getting 15 victories in 2010 — with a 3.12 ERA in 32 starts and was selected to his first All-Star game. He reached 200 innings the past two seasons.

The A’s reportedly will receive three minor leaguers in the swap.

As usual, the A’s are trading anyone the fans might actually pay to see. Merry Christmas!

    Attn. Mr Bean,
A “team” is a collection of players who develop a chemistry by playing with each other. it is NOT simply a collection of guys tossed together one year and dispersed at the end. We, your fans, want to see a “team” play ball and subsequently win. I know you have limitations and directives from the “boss” but why, oh why must you decimate the team each year?
Keep a core of 18 to 20 good players and add a few to make the “team” better, not make a whole new team that only plays “together” come late July or August.

As an ex- long time A’s fan, I have to wonder if anyone cares what moves the A’s make. The ownership has made it impossible to maintain interest in the team.
I’m sure that’s part of the plan. Drive away the customers then complain that you have to move due to a lack of paying customers.
