Suspect Shot During Richmond Pursuit Stable After Surgery

RICHMOND (CBS SF) - A man who was shot by Richmond police at a hotel near the Hilltop Mall on Wednesday has emerged from surgery in stable condition, a police lieutenant said Thursday.

The shooting occurred Wednesday afternoon at the Courtyard Marriott hotel at 3150 Garritty Way after police responded to a report of a man with a gun at a neighboring hotel, Extended Stay America, police said.

An Extended Stay America guest had called police around 1 p.m. after spotting a man with a gun in his waistband, prompting arriving officers to surround the hotel.

Richmond police Lt. Andre Hill said the suspect left the hotel through a rear door and fled to the Courtyard Marriott. Police then surrounded that hotel, and one officer shot the suspect when he emerged.

That officer, whose name has not been released, is now on paid administrative leave, which Hill said is "a formality while the investigation is ongoing."

Hotel representatives have declined to comment on the incident.
