Governor Brown Reflects On 1st Year In Office, Lays Out His Tax Plan

SACRAMENTO (KCBS)--- Governor Jerry Brown met with reporters Tuesday to review his first year in office and look ahead to what's next.

The governor said it's exhilarating and exciting to be running the state again and he said he thinks he's doing a pretty good job.

He'll propose more budget cuts next month, but those cuts won't hurt K-12 schools, he said.

"My budget will give more to schools than they got last year," he said.

The governor thinks voters will approve his initiative to raise income and sales tax, which he hoped Republican lawmakers would support earlier.

KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:

"I learned that Republicans can't vote for a tax," he said. "They cannot vote to give the people a vote on the tax."

Brown said he hopes to finish out his time in office without having his head stuck on a pike like a ancient Roman leader fallen from grace.

"You enter in triumph and you leave on tiptoe," he said.
