Daily Madden: What Happened To Defense?

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - After high scoring games in the Fiesta Bowl and Rose Bowl Monday, John Madden had a question for the KCBS morning crew.

"What happened to defense? I watch these games, and no one can stop anyone anymore," Madden said. "When I watch these college games, the offenses are all ahead of the defenses, and when I watch pro football, the offenses are all ahead of the defenses... There's something there. Either all the better players are playing offense now and the lesser players are playing defense... There's something going on."

Poor defense cost the Oakland Raiders a playoff spot when they lost to the San Diego Chargers in Oakland Sunday.

"Someone asked me what do the Raiders have to do to beat San Diego, and I said they have to knock Philip Rivers down and do it early," Madden said. "They did once and then let him get way too comfortable. Then the forest fire started and they couldn't put it out."

Good defense could help the 49ers advance through the playoffs.

"I kind of like them in this playoff thing," Madden said. "The 49ers have the best defense and the best special teams. Now that used to be the formula to win championships." (9:05)
