Dozens Of Pet Birds Killed In Oakland House Fire

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - At least 60 birds were killed in a fire in a home near Lake Merritt in Oakland Thursday evening, a fire battalion chief said.

The one-alarm fire was reported around 7:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Harvard Way, near Lakeshore Avenue, Battalion Chief Robert Lipp.

The family escaped the home without injury, but at least 60 pet birds living in the basement were killed, Lipp said.

The fire's cause remains under investigation, but Lipp said it appeared to be accidental.
