Fresno Mother Kills 4 Family Members Before Taking Own Life

FRESNO (CBS/AP) -- Four family members involved in an apparent murder-suicide at a Fresno apartment all died from a single gunshot wound to the head, according to authorities.

The coroner released the preliminary results of the autopsy Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the fifth family member and only survivor, Eduardo Lopez, remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Lopez was inside the Fresno apartment with his girlfriend, Aide Mendez, when she allegedly began her attack Sunday.

Police say Mendez shot and stabbed Lopez, then fatally shot her two young children and her cousin before turning the gun on herself. A 7-year-old neighbor girl who was in the apartment escaped unharmed.

Prior to the killing, Mendez recorded herself and her cousin smoking methamphetamine. Officials say a toxicology report won't be available for several days.
