Tech Report: Android Has An Edge In Battle With iPhone

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Research firm Nielsen projected Monday that Android is going to become the platform of choice for developers over the next year.

We hear a lot about how well the iPhone is selling, but KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid reports, with Android available on so many vendors and carriers on a global level, they have somewhat of an edge because only Apple makes the iPhone.

KCBS' Technology Analyst Reports:

"You can get Android phones from LG, Motorola, HTC, Samsung. I'm sure there are dozens more," he said.

Magid said of newly purchased smart phones in the last quarter, that Google's Android platform had nearly 52 percent of the market compared to the iPhone's 37 percent. Blackberry came in at a distant six percent.

"Clearly it's a horserace between Android and iPhone. With all the Android vendors, it's only natural that they pull ahead," Magid said.

Magid also independently observed that iPhone users tend to spend more money on applications and using them.

You can hear Larry Magid's Tech Report Monday through Friday at 3:50pm on KCBS All News 740AM and 106.9FM.
